Start a coffee van business

Hello there

I live on a farm that has lots of public footpaths around the land and am considering a mobile coffe van to supply the lots of walkers and cyclists that use the paths. As it is to be parked on private land, what permissions are necessary and what qualifications would I need to undertake? As it is the be in a vehicle that can be moved, my idea is that I attend various horse shows, shooting events, of course with the permission of the landowners, however the farm spans 2 diff end council boroughs so would I need to seek permission from both? Also, there is a public footpath that runs through the farm where we live, actually through the garden so could I in theory also trade from my driveway? Many thanks, Laura

Hi Laura,

That’s a great idea! Selling coffee to walkers and cyclists can work really well.
Here’s what you need to know:

Council permission:
Even on private land, you usually need a trading licence or street trading consent from your local council.
Because your farm is in two council areas, it’s best to ask both councils which one covers your exact spot.

Landowner permission:
If you go to horse shows or other farms, always get written permission from the landowner before you set up.

Food and hygiene training:
You’ll need a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate. You can do it online in one day.

Register your food business:
You must register your coffee van with your local council’s Environmental Health Department at least 28 days before trading.
(It’s free and simple online.)

Health and safety checks:
You’ll need a gas safety check (for LPG) and an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) if you use mains or generator power.

Insurance:
Get public liability insurance — it protects you if someone slips or gets hurt.

Trading on your driveway:
If it’s private property and not blocking the road, you can often trade there, but still check with your council — some have special local rules

In short:

- Ask your council first
- Get food hygiene training
- Register your van
- Keep it safe with gas, electric, and insurance

Wishing you the best of luck
