ridge, straps, fryer, catering trailer safety

Hi,
We ve just bought our first catering trailer so our already established food business is mobile. We're a bit unsure about a few things regarding the equipment and wondered if anyone could possibly help?
First of all is the fridge, do we have it on at home before an event so its cold when we get there?
How do we secure heavy equipment? We'll be having a slush machine and are worried it may fall off the side, or slide all over the floor if we lift it down for travelling?
Also, the oil in the fryer, do you have to empty it for travelling back home? If its hot what can we empty it into?
This is our first mobile catering trailer, and there's no-one we know to ask.
Many thanks
Audrey

Catering Trailer Equipment
by: MobCater

Hi Audrey,

Congratulations on getting your first catering trailer — that’s an exciting step! These are really good questions and ones every new mobile trader has at the start.

Fridge – Pre-cooling:
Yes, it’s best to plug it in at home or your base before leaving, so it’s already cold when you arrive. Most caterers use a generator or mains hookup at the event to keep it running. Always transport it upright and avoid opening it until you’re set up.

Securing Equipment:
Heavy items like slush machines, fryers, and water boilers should be strapped or bolted to the worktop or a secure base.
Use ratchet straps, anti-slip mats, or metal brackets to stop them sliding. For removable machines, you can use a floor anchor or small lashing point rings fixed into the counter or trailer frame.

Fryer Oil – Travelling Safely:

Yes, always empty fryer oil before moving — even short trips. Hot oil is dangerous during transport.
Let it cool down completely, then pour it into a metal oil drum or heat-proof container with a tight lid.
If the oil is still good for reuse, filter and store it for next time; otherwise, dispose of it via a licensed waste oil collector.

Bonus Tips:

Keep your weight balanced in the trailer — heavier equipment over the axle.

Fit rubber mats or non-slip flooring to prevent shifting.

Do a quick checklist before towing (gas off, plugs out, lids secured). Hope this guides in the right direction.
