Mobile Catering - Started Trading Inside a Football Stadium

by Harminder

Hi David

I've actually started trading inside a football stadium. Only been there a week so still early days. Just wanted to know whether you had any competition when you traded at football matches?

If yes, how did you get customers to come to you instead of the burger van down the road?

Also I want to get a regular pitch during the week. How did you get your first pitch on the industrial estate and what kind of rent can I expect to pay?

Best Way to Deal with Competition
by: David

Hello Harminder,

The best way to deal with competition is to offer a better service than you competitors.

This does not mean to just have a lower price, take some time to investigate the competition and see what you are up against.

Investigate things like:

Prices
Service
Quality of food
Menu variety
Value for money
Presentation of trailer, equipment and the person serving the food etc

This will give you a goo overview of your competitors, then ask the question “Can you do better?’’

Can you offer a better service, such as a deliver service, place order by phone, food vouchers for loyal customers, morning paper to read, seating arrangements, and small awning cover from rain or sun and so on?

You will be surprised what you can improve on.

I always had a morning paper, freshly baked baguettes – colourful food wraps, quality serviettes (with phone number), sip and seal coffee cups, paper bags and so on.

Try and anticipate your customer’s needs and then meet those needs, don’t forget to ask them “how can you best improve the service or menu etc”

Finally with regards to finding a pitch it’s just a matter of driving around, asking people, contacting the landlord and being persistent with it.

Rent varies depending on the location, who owns it and how many daily customers you are likely to receive.

Hope this helps, best of luck and keep us updated!

David
