Start Your Donut & Crepe Mobile Unit — Quick UK Guide for Licences, Insurance, and Equipment

Hi Guys's,

Thank you so much for all the info you share. I am currently running a very good candy cart business, I am now looking at expanding and am interested in a donuts/crepe stand. I would be looking at doing this on a weekend at fairs, party's, events etc but I need some advise.....
If I am doing it just at events do I need a licence?
Will Public Liability Insurance be enough?
Do you have any good suppliers for the mixes?
Do you have a good UK supplier for equipment?
Thank you so much :)

Hi there,

That’s a great next step — donuts and crepes work really well at weekend fairs and private events, so you’re on the right track! Here’s a quick rundown to help:

🍩 Licences & Permissions
If you’re only trading at organised fairs or private events, you usually don’t need your own street trading licence. The event organiser normally holds the permission for that site.
However, you’ll still need to:

Register your food business with your local council (it’s free and must be done at least 28 days before trading).

Follow all food-safety and hygiene rules — a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate is strongly recommended.

Insurance

Yes, Public Liability Insurance is essential, and most events require at least £5 million cover. You’ll also want Product Liability and, if you employ anyone, Employers Liability Insurance too.

Mix & Ingredients Suppliers
For consistent results, try UK catering wholesalers such as CaterKwik, Nisbets, or CrepeAffaire Trade for mix bases, or buy in bulk from trusted bakery suppliers like Bako or Booker.

Equipment Suppliers

Look for LPG-compatible machines if you’re going mobile. MobCater, Adexa, and Nisbets stock gas or electric crepe makers, donut fryers, and bain-maries suitable for trailers and pop-ups. Always check CE certification and gas safety labels.

Final Tip

Keep your setup compact, easy to clean, and fully portable — that helps with inspections and setup speed at events.

Disclaimer: This information is for general guidance only. Always confirm local licensing and safety requirements with your council before trading.
