Found a Kiosk in a Very Cool Location in London

by Jolanta

I have found a kiosk in a very cool location in London that currently is selling hot and cold food. The current owner is not doing that well and wants to sell.

I have done my calculations and I am confident I can make good money there, but I do not know anything about permissions and licences that I need.

The current owner is trading there under temporary trading licence. The owner is asking for £30K for the kiosk with all equipment and the pitch. I am not concerned about the money they are asking, but very worried about licence and permission to trade, so my question to you is: Can the licence and the pitch be transferred to me.

What do I need to do first? Your assistance is greatly appreciated, I plan to offer my customers quality fast healthy food; sandwiches, salads and fruits, fresh fruit juices, hot and cold beverages etc.

Mobile Catering Kiosk
by: David-

Hello,

I would just contact the local planning department and ask them regarding the site. The seller may have some type of agreement with the landlord. However, it’s common practice for a seller to charge for an existing customer base that has been built up over the years. I would visit the site and see how busy the pitch is on a few days before agreeing to any financial arrangements.

Regards,
David

Buying a mobile catering business with site
by: Anonymous

I am interested in a mobile kiosk with pitch. It has planning permission to trade from the said pitch and has all the relevant certificates.
It has been trading on the site for nearly 40 years.
Can the seller charge me for the customer base as well as the vehicle with planning permission

Central London Catering Pitch
by: David

Hi Jolanta,

The first thing I would do is to call your local council (environmental health officer) and make sure that this food business is registered with them.

Also if this business is currently trading on public land do they have permission to trade at the current location? If their license is with the council mention to them if this is also transferable to someone else as a new business owner.

If the business is trading on private land with a private landlord, you will have to get in contact with the landlord and ask similar questions, mainly can this trading license be extended, rent prices and so on.

Please don't take anything at face value, do you own investigations until you are 100% sure of what you are buying into. I found myself in a similar situation, but found out before I went ahead that the seller was actually been thrown off the pitch and did not have a business or pitch to sell.

Best of luck and please let me know how you can get on.

Regards
David
