Quick guide to converting a caravan into a safe mobile waffle and ice-cream van.

Wanting to start a waffle and ice cream van and was wondering what I need in the van ie the walls and units do they need to be stainless steel or can you just use like household ones and also do I need a fan system? As only hot things would be a waffle iron. Would also like to know if you run it of a generator or car battery. I want to try and buy I cheap one and convert it myself so any help would be appreciated email madderchef@gmail.com

Converting a Caravan Into a Waffle & Ice-Cream Van – Simple UK Guide
by: MobCater

Hello,

You can convert a caravan into a waffle and ice-cream van, but you need to be careful. Caravans are built for domestic leisure use, not for commercial catering, so the structure, chassis and internal fittings are not as strong as a purpose-built catering trailer.

Always check with your local council’s Environmental Health Officer before you start any work.

Here’s the simple breakdown.

1. Do the walls need to be stainless steel?

No.
Environmental Health do not require stainless steel. They only want surfaces that are:

smooth

waterproof

wipe-clean

non-absorbent

no cracks or gaps

Most people use:

PVC wall cladding

hygienic wall boards

bathroom-grade wall panels

Cheap, light and approved by councils everywhere.

2. Can you use household kitchen units?

Yes — but with caution.
Household units are not designed for heavy use, heat or vibration, so choose carefully.

They must be:

strong and fixed properly

wipe-clean

sealed edges (no raw chipboard exposed)

stable when driving

If the caravan frame is weak or the floor is soft, you may need reinforcement before fitting units.

3. Do you need a fan or extraction system?

For waffles:

You don’t need a commercial extractor because it’s not a greasy fryer.

But waffle irons make steam and heat, which can cause condensation.

Use simple options like:

a roof vent

a 12v extractor fan

or a small cooker hood

This keeps moisture down and stops damp inside the caravan.

4. Generator or car battery?

Car battery = No chance.
A waffle iron would drain a car battery in minutes.

Generator = Yes.
This is what almost all mobile traders use.

A waffle iron (1.5–2kW) plus fridges and freezers normally need a 3kW–5kW inverter generator.
LPG models are quieter and cheaper to run.

If the park has mains power, that’s always the best option.

5. Power needs for waffle and ice-cream setups

Typical equipment:

waffle iron: 1.5–2kW

freezer(s): 200–400W each

lighting & water pump: small amount

generator: 3–5kW recommended

Ice-cream freezers need steady power, so don’t under-size the generator.

6. What does Environmental Health look for?

They mainly want:

wipe-clean walls, floors, worktops

hot water + handwash sink

waste water container

safe electrics

roof vent or extractor

fire extinguisher & first aid

equipment safely installed

They don’t care whether it’s a caravan or a £20,000 trailer — just that it’s clean, safe, and sensible.

7. Can you convert a cheap caravan yourself?

Yes, but with a warning.
Many people have done it successfully, but caravans are built for light domestic use, not commercial catering.
The frame, chassis, brakes, flooring and wall structure may need strengthening.

Before starting, always get advice from:

your local council’s Environmental Health Officer, and a catering trailer manufacturer, especially about structural safety and ventilation.

This avoids expensive mistakes and makes sure your build will pass inspection. We hope this helps point you in the right direction. Best of luck with the waffle business and keep us updated.

Disclaimer:
This information is general advice based on UK mobile catering experience. Always check with your local council’s Environmental Health Officer before starting a conversion. Gas and electrical work must be carried out by qualified professionals. Caravans are not designed for commercial catering and may need structural reinforcement or professional assessment.
