Gas Appliance Without a CE Mark
by: MobCater

Hello,

That’s a really good and important question — and it’s one that catches a lot of new traders out. Here’s a simple and honest explanation from a UK mobile catering point of view

1 What the CE (or UKCA) mark means

The CE (or UKCA after Brexit) mark shows that a gas appliance has been tested and certified as safe for use in the UK or EU.
It’s not just a sticker — it confirms the appliance meets:

Gas Appliance Regulations (GAR 2018)

Pressure Equipment Directive

Safety, emissions, and construction standards

Without that mark, the appliance is not legally approved for commercial use in the UK.

2 Can a gas engineer still test it?

A Gas Safe engineer can test for leaks or safe operation, but they cannot certify an appliance that doesn’t have a CE or UKCA mark.

Even if it works safely, it’s still not legally compliant, so you could:

Fail your FSA / council inspection

Be refused insurance cover

Risk fines or trading restrictions at events

3 Bottom line

You can’t use a non-CE or non-UKCA gas appliance commercially — even if it "passes" a safety test.
For private/home use, it’s your own risk, but for business use (like your gazebo pancake stall), it’s not allowed.

4 What to do next

Contact the seller to ask for documentation — sometimes the CE plate is on the underside or rear.

If there’s no certification at all, return them and buy units with:

"CE" (for pre-2021 imports)

or "UKCA" (for UK-approved after 2021)

LPG category I3P or I3+ on the data plate

Helpful Tip

When you buy gas appliances for catering, always look for:

a) CE / UKCA mark
b) LPG 37mbar or I3P pressure rating
c) Clear manufacturer details

That ensures your insurance, engineer, and event organisers will all approve your setup with no problems. Wishing you the best of luck with this.
