Chip Man Used to Drive Up On Our Estate with His Mobile Fish and Chip Van

Hello I am thinking of investing into a mobile catering trailer.

As a kid I remember the chip man used to drive up on our estate with his mobile fish and chip van and sell fish and chips to the residents on the estate rather like an ice cream van. I was just wondering if you would need permission from the council to do this now??

Lots of hassle for diminishing margins!

Hi, I run a fish & chip van and it is difficult!
There are lots of local restrictions and also our local County Council operate a blanket ban on road side frying. We only survive by finding private forcourts to serve from, even then the council wanted to move us on because the shop did not have permission for A3 use!

Selling Fish and Chips From Your Van

This should be possible the best thing to do is to approach the council and see if they agree. As they will be able to point you in the right direction.

If they agree, you may have to apply for a street trading licence.

Also consider finding a private location that you could pay a small fee for. This will allow you to to park up while you cook and prepare the food.

Best of luck, and do let us know how you go on.

Regards
David

Mobile Fich and Chip Business

Hi Natasha,

Unfortunately the days of driving up and down selling fish and chips are long gone. Now you will need to register with your local council, have your food and hygiene cert, insurances etc. There is no easy way around it anymore; you will have to set up professionally especially if you are selling food to the public.

Don?t let this put you off though as anything worth doing is worth doing properly.

Best of luck

David
