Catering Trailer from owned property?

by Pam
(Northampton)

My brother has recently brought a food trailer and wants to put it on his owned property in a small street just near where they are building 400+ houses. There is currently no catering van there and no local business that it will be affected, as the local bakery only does rolls etc.

I was wondering what he would need to do if anything to get permission to trade. He already owns and runs a very successful gas engineering company. I have a food hygiene certificate and I would be running the van. Any suggestions? Would we need a street traders licence or because it will be situated on his land only, would we be ok? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you

Catering Business from Home
by: David-

Hello Russell,

It's not that straightforward to open a catering business, never mind trading from a residential property. It seems highly unlikely this will be granted, either way, you can always call the EHO at your local council to find out.

Best,
David

Catering Van Building Site
by: David

Hello There,

He can park the food vehicle outside his property, but won’t be permitted to trade from a residential location. If he owns the land, he will still need to apply for planning permission before he can start trading. A better option may be to ask the site manager of the building site to see if he can get the van onto the building site and trade from there. The next step would be to register the food business with the local council, this needs to be done 28 days before you start can start trading. They will also advise you on the type or licence/permit that may be required

Wishing you the best of luck,
