Site canteen in Darlaston Walsall NEW
by: Dave

I am due to start a large site in Darlaston within the coming weeks and would like a canteen staffed for the men on site, average 50+ men at guess per day rising to more as the job progresses.

I will need someone to run the canteen which means you having your own equipment and running it as your own business with no costs to my site, you make what you make from the men.

Would this be of interest to anyone? obviously you wood need all of the associated food hygiene qualifications.

Please contact me on via email: david.norris@cpplc.com or 07584 442051

Hi everyone,
Can you please say what legal documents require canteen on building site? Do I need to deal with council or it is just a thing with company who owns the site? At the moment i have public liability insurance and due diligence for stationary business.
Many thanks

Re building site contracts
by: sue

Hi, i have done site catering on and off for 15 years, can i just say building site pitches are Not always free.

It depends on the company and who owns the land etc etc, i made a good living out of site contracts but had to stop for a few years after getting divorced and am now looking to start up again but with a partner rather than having full responsibility myself as some of the bigger sites are so tying and such long hours etc.

Then there's the stock to pick up after work or very early the next morning as its not always cost effective to get everything delivered then some site managers wont let the delivery vans on and off at certain times of the day due to health and safety.

There's a lot to be considered also its not always wise to take a written contract as you are then tied to staying there until the end and anyone who has done site catering from the start of the site until the end will tell you in the early days and the final phase there's not that many men and you could or most likely will be out of pocket.

You most probably will be charged a fee if you don't turn up due to illness etc etc but if you do it right from the start it is very lucrative and only take on a site you can manage etc.

Decide if you are wanting a site you can work alone or if you want to employ staff, what hours you want to work etc etc. When i stopped trading i secured pitches and sold them for a while to keep my hand in if you like.

You would not believe how many people thought they could feed 400 men with 2 staff or some would think they needed 4 staff on a 60 man site. I have learned by my mistakes and i have made my fair share of them over the years, but by the time i stopped trading i had site work down to a fine art and that is why i still kept my hand in if you like.

If anyone wants advice or to partner up with me in the north east north Yorkshire area please don't hesitate to call me 07875524749 also if anyone wants me to set them up and possibly find them a site through my old contacts then give me a call 07875524749 thanks

Sue

on site
by: Rob

I did this for 3 years on different Taylor Wimpey sites..

You can actually do this without a burger van as most sites have a canteen.

I approached the site manager and asked if i could run their canteen....I put my own equipment in there and i was ready to trade.

My only outgoing was my stock as i had the canteen rent free(just gave the site manager a few bacon buttys)

This was very cost effective but remember once the site is finished you will have to re-locate.

Key points in building sites
by: Mike

Hi,

building sites are lucrative not only because of the builders on site, but also because of the many different contractors that will arrive on a daily basis.

As soon as you find a site, see the manager, be extremely polite and SMILE!!! Ask permission to park somewhere you don't bother anyone and hopefully he will agree to give you a space. Be flexible! Do tell about your food and hygiene qualification and explain the sort of insurance cover you have; mention the 5 million pounds liability cover... it always impresses people and it shows you are a pro.

They shouldn't ask you a fee to park there, as it's not their property, but don't be too fuzzy, because there is a lot of money to be made and someone IS going to collect it one way or another, so try to make that you.

Open early, as builders start their day very early. They usually go home at around 2/3 pm so be ready to trade at 6am the latest, therefore be there by 5. That gives you enough time to boil the water for tea and coffee (that's the first thing they want in the morning) and get ready; you don't want to miss on their breakfast, as that's their main meal of the day. Many builders keep light at lunch.

Hope this helps.
Mike

Building sites...
by: Anonymous

I have thought about this too. But I wonder what financial arrangement would be the norm for a site such as this? Would you pay the builder/site owner for the site or would they pay you for providing facilities for their workers? Can anyone advise?

Building Sites Can Be Very Lucrative,
by: David

Hi Carl,

Sure I will try and help you the best I can. Firstly I am assuming that you already have you own catering vehicle and aware of all the legal procedures which you should comply with before you get started if not please sign up for not please sign up for my 12 step guide on mobile catering.

The good thing with building sites is that can be very lucrative, as I myself have worked on 2-3 different ones. The thing you need to do first is find a building site.

If it's an up and coming building site then this is better as you will have more chance to offer your hot food service.

Once you have located a suitable location, simply ask the site manager who will be able to tell you if they have already arranged hot food services or not. Hopefully the answer will be no and from here you will be able to negotiate with the site manager all the necessary details.

Bear in mind that the building and construction industry is still recovering and it may be a little more difficult to find a building site. But saying that I worked on a Homebase site and apparently they are still building (even during the recession) a good number of stores each year. The same goes for Asda, Morrisons and Tesco.

Best of luck to you both!
David
