Thanks For Sharing Your Mobile Catering Business..How Can I

Hi There,

Thanks ever so much for sharing your new business story with me, I found it very helpful. I too am looking to start a catering business but mine will be with fish, I'm not looking to buy a small trailer (the ones you'd find outside a pub).

I'm looking to buy a large one, but I’m so nervous, I’m looking to sell very high quality fish, large fish platters etc.

I got the idea when I was at the races and the queue's for the fish were crazy, and a small plate of mixed fish
was selling at £12, £24 for the large!

Obviously I would like to be able to get into big events e.g. Golf, Horse Racing, Motor Racing but I have know idea who I would approach.

I also here from people that it is very hard to get a site at the large events, but I don’t give up easily and Id at least like to try.

I just don’t know where to start, or who I need to contact. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? I to have come from IT, I worked in a Suisse bank in Canary Wharf for 10 years, and this would be a great change for me.

I know I would enjoy it, I just don’t want this bubble to burst or let my nerves get the better of me.

Also I wanted to ask, do you have to sort out an account to deal with your takings. Do you need to open a company through Companies house? Or is it a case of what you make is yours?

Hi Sophie,

For the LPG certificate try corgi lpg gas on 01256 372 300 they should be able to give you a number of someone closer to where you live, if they are not in your area.

Also for your food and hygiene certificate call your local council and see if they run any courses, failing that try your local collage.

Don't Just Focus on 1 Food Choice Of Food For Your Catering Business
by: Anonymous

Hi Sophie,

I am very excited for you and hope that you do manage to keep up the momentum and start your own mobile catering business. Although be aware that you might find the competition stiff by just choosing to focus only on type of food, fish/platters. You might want expand your menu a bit to include the more basic food items, so that you can cater for a wider variety of events and gain more experience in the process.

A good place to start to find the sort of events you want to cater for is the eventsbook.co.uk website. They have a full listing of events from with over 500 events around the country unfortunately you will have to by a book to get access to this information but it might be worth it for you. Apart from this, try contacting the event directly to find out what they charge for you to rent a space.

Try and find your pitch first and then find yourself a clean trailer or rent one to see if you like the business. Now the money part, you need to register within three months your business with Inland Revenue call them on 0845 915 4515 for more details If you don't register you may be liable for a fine/penalty charge, it?s always best to do things properly avoiding any future problems.

Lastly your starting a business, taking control over your future- at times it going to be tough. Find the courage and just go for it, you won't know until you give it a try.

Please keep me updated

Kind Regards

David
