Set up Mobile Catering Business in Carpark

by Amanda
(England)

There is a local large shopping centre near me that has lots of shops in it but only has 1 café. It has a supermarket inside too but this has no café either.

Though there is a Gregg's and a Pound Bakery. There did used to be a McDonald's there and this was always busy but shut down as I think the lease was too high!

I'd like to set up a mobile catering unit on the car park outside. The car park always seems to be full. I'm waiting for the landlord to get back to me to see if they will allow me to do this.

My question to you is; Do you think this will be a viable business for me to take a chance with?
There are thousands of people each week that go in there and they don't have anywhere that does burgers.

Many thanks
Amanda

Catering Business in Car Park

Hi Amanda,

From what you have described it seems to be a good opportunity and one where the conditions are favourable for a mobile catering business. More importantly you’ve taken the time to do some important market research to make sure there is a demand for the service.

It’s just now a matter of negotiating terms, rent and permission to trade with the landlord. Hopefully this also comes with some sort of contract to give you added security.

The landlord may need to seek planning permission from the planning department as the land will need a “change of use”, and factor in any other outgoing i.e. council trading license (£750- £1200per year)

The main thing is you have got the ball rolling so it’s just a matter of waiting for a response. I really hope that this opportunity works out for you, wishing you the best of luck.
David
