Mobile Catering on Private Land And Street Trading Licence?

by Looby

Hi

I am situated on an industrial estate in an industrial unit...so on private land. When I was inspected by Environmental Health, I was told if I sold to people from the Industrial estate other than the staff and customers of the unit where I am sited, then I would need a street license.

They backed this up in writing when awarding my rating. I said I was only selling to customers of the unit itself...but I am fearful of a visit as the £1000 + fee for a street license was something I hadn't budgeted for.

Can anyone advise?

Mobile coffee van

Hi, I am in the process of setting up a mobile coffee van in the West Midlands and plan to target business on trading estates. I'm somewhat confused regarding the street trading laws and being in private land I.e trading estate, office car park etc. if the company invites me to be there do I need a full street trade licence....?

Street Trading Licence

Hello Looby,

I’m not sure I understand this question, who else can you sell the food to on the Industrial Estate other than the people working or visiting the industrial estate.

May be they are referring to you marketing your food business outside the estate or selling to other local businesses outside the estate. I don’t think that you need to worry too much about this since you are not running out into the street to sell your food items. If people find out naturally about your business and then come into the estate to buy some food this has nothing to do with you and so you can’t be held accountable.

If you would like to provide more specific facts then I might be able to offer you more insights, for instance what does the contract say about trading obligations. You may need to go through this just to make sure what you can and can’t do.

Regards,
David
