How Do I Get a Business Phone Number for My Mobile Catering Unit?
by: MobCater

Lena, getting a proper business number is a small job, but it makes a mobile unit look more established. It also keeps your personal numbers off every flyer and Facebook post.

First, the free part. The free virtual numbers you keep finding are American because free UK numbers are very rare. The few that exist tend to come with adverts or limits, or they quietly disappear. Most proper UK virtual number services charge a few pounds a month. For a catering business I think that is money well spent, because if the number vanishes, so do the event bookings that were trying to reach you.

A virtual number is the right idea for what you describe. You get one business number, and the provider rings both of your personal mobiles at the same time, or one after the other, so whoever is free picks up. Most will also show you it is a business call before you answer, so you know to give the business name rather than a casual hello. When you compare providers, check they can ring two mobiles together, that voicemail comes through to the app or your email, and that you can switch the business line off at night.

For the number itself, I would go for a local Scottish area code that matches where you are based. People trust a local number, and it costs them nothing extra on most mobile contracts. An 03 number is fine too, because callers pay the same as for a normal landline call. Avoid 084 and 087 numbers. They cost your customers more and put people off ringing.

If you really want to spend nothing, the workaround is a pay as you go SIM in a spare phone, or a second eSIM in one of your own phones if it supports dual SIM. Set WhatsApp Business up on that number. It is free, and you can link the second person's phone so you both see the messages. Calls are the weak spot, though, because a normal SIM can only divert to one other number.

One tip from the van. When you are mid service with a queue you will not answer, so record a short voicemail greeting with your hours and where you are trading that week, then ring people back once you have closed up.

If you would rather not miss those calls at all, an AI receptionist is the next step up. It answers your business number when you can't, takes the details and texts you after each call. We have used Websmartz for a long time on our own sites, and they do one for £49 a month plus VAT: AI receptionist from Websmartz. It isn't free, so I'd only think about it once the bookings are coming in.

Best wishes

David
