Hi, I have a vintage caravan and preparing to advertise for offering children's parties on their premises in the caravan. I will be providing cake,s sweets, prepared sandwiches etc.

Can you tell me what sort of licences I will need, or in fact anything I should be aware of.

1. Food Business Registration
You must register your food business with your local council at least 28 days before you start trading. This is free and can be done on the UK government website or through your local authority.

2. Food Hygiene Certificate
While not legally required, having a Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety Certificate (or higher) is highly recommended, especially if you’re handling and preparing food. This can be done online in just a few hours.

3. Hygiene & Safety Rules
Your caravan must meet hygiene standards, which means:

Handwashing Facilities – A sink with hot and cold water.
Food Storage – Proper refrigeration for perishable items.
Clean Surfaces – Easy-to-clean worktops and flooring.

4. Public Liability Insurance
You must have public liability insurance to protect yourself in case of accidents, food-related illness, or damage. Look for a policy covering at least £5 million, especially since you're working with children.

5. Allergen Labelling
Since you’re serving cakes, sweets, and sandwiches, you need to provide allergen information. Make a list of ingredients and highlight common allergens like nuts, dairy, gluten, and eggs.

6. DBS Check (Recommended)
Since you’re working with children, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (previously CRB) is advisable. While not legally required for private events, parents will likely appreciate the reassurance.

7. Licenses & Permissions
Premises License – If you plan to serve hot food after 11 PM or play music, you may need one.
Landowner Permission – If your caravan will be parked somewhere permanently, check with the landowner or local council.

8. Fire & Gas Safety
If using gas appliances, you need a Gas Safety Certificate (CP44) from a Gas Safe engineer.
Fire extinguishers and a fire blanket are required.

9. Planning & Advertising
Consider a website or social media page to promote your services.
Check local planning laws if the caravan will be permanently stationed somewhere.
