I found this very useful indeed, i am in accountancy and it sounds silly but i have wanted to do this for so long.

Your story has really inspired me. My partner said if i get all the facts together of what i will need to get started he will help me.

I am wondering like you did after i get all the equipment how to start selling and where to start.

Okay these are roughly the steps that I took to launch my catering business


  • Market research to make sure that their was a demand for my service.


  • Take food and hygiene test


  • Raise some capital for catering vehicle


  • Searched for catering van according to budget, driving up and down the country looking


  • Brought vehicle and started figuring out how all the equipment works. (£3000+ pounds, but can get cheaper)


  • source great tasting food, drinks and purchased some stock(£250+pounds)


  • Practiced cooking for friends and family as never cooked before in my life.


  • Got safety check done on LPG equipment (£150+pounds)


  • Purchased liability insurance (£150+)


  • Rent Catering Pitch which will give you the permission you need to trade(£50+ per week depending on how busy pitch will become


  • Register with Environmental Health so that they can visit you and trailer for inspection as you will be selling food to the public




    • It?s probably better for you if you can secure a pitch early on in your businesses, for me it was on my mind but I didn?t worry too much about finding a pitch.

    I thought well I'll find somewhere to trade or just turn up and start cooking.As I didn't know any better when I first started.

    Hopefully you will be a little better organized than me.
