Baking Mobile Catering

Hi David,

With my partner we are planning to start our own mobile catering business.

We plan to bake and sell different types of cakes and pastries on the board of a van. Would you say it is a viable idea?

How should we pick a pitch to sell from? Regarding my partner a local (high) school would be the best place as kids are the ones who like delicious treats the most.

If we want to start the business at public place, we have to register at the local Council (Canvey Island, Castle Point Borough, Essex) - do we get licence for trading at a specific place or just a licence that we can trade from any public area?

Thanks,

Imre

Hi Imre,

I think that you may fair better at local markets or farmers markets this would give you a good way to test and sell your products. From here you could approach some local independent stores and ask them to sell your products.

As for the local high school this may not be the best way forward as council and schools don’t really allow this type of food to be sold in close proximity to schools since they are trying to promote healthy eating, and I’m not sure if what you intend to sell, falls into this category.

I think that you have 3 options either register and cook food from you home kitchen, do the same in a catering trailer or think about renting a commercial kitchen, this will save you the hassle of getting your kitchen inspected and registered with the local council.

Also, to sell these types of food you probably have to think of a good brand name and USP (unique selling proposition) to make your products stand out from the competition. This can all be done as long as the product is very good and you believe 100% in what you are selling.

Hope this helps,
