Do I Need a Licence for a Food Caravan, and Can I Rent a Council Pitch?
by: MobCater

Hi abdul, this is one that confuses a lot of people starting out, because there isn't a single "mobile catering licence" you can apply for. It's really a few separate steps that add up to being allowed to trade.

The first thing to sort is registering your food business with Birmingham City Council's environmental health team. That registration is free, it's a legal requirement, and you need to do it at least 28 days before you start trading. They will want to know about your caravan, your menu and your equipment, and they will usually pop out to have a look before you open. Alongside that, get yourself a Food Hygiene Level 2 certificate, which is the one qualification you genuinely must have.

Now, the bay you're asking about. If you want to trade on a public road, pavement or a designated spot in the city, that needs a street trading consent or licence, and Birmingham City Council is the body that grants it. Fees vary a fair bit by location, anywhere from around £50 to several hundred pounds a year. Some councils do run designated pitches that you effectively rent through that consent, so the best move is to ring the council's licensing team directly and ask what trading sites they have available and how the waiting list works. It does vary, and a quick phone call will tell you more than any website.

If a council pitch isn't available, the other route is renting private land, say a pub car park or a forecourt, with the owner's written permission. You would still register your food business, but trading off the public highway can mean you sidestep the street trading consent altogether.

One last thing worth checking: some councils have their own view on caravan-based units versus purpose-built trailers, so confirm yours meets their standards before you commit. And do sort public liability insurance, as every council and site will expect it.

Best wishes

David
