Dark Kitchen Setup

Yes — you’ll need to get permission before setting up a dark kitchen (a food kitchen that sells online or for delivery only) in the back of your vape shop.

Here’s what to check step by step:

Change of use:

Because your shop is a retail premises (selling vapes), cooking and preparing food changes what the building is used for. You’ll likely need to apply for a "change of use" through your local council’s planning department. It’s not a huge job, but it makes sure your property is legally classed for food use.

Register as a food business:
You must register your new kitchen with your local environmental health team at least 28 days before opening. It’s free and part of food safety law.

Health & safety standards:
The space must meet proper hygiene and ventilation rules — things like washable walls, hot water, extractor fans, and pest-proofing.

Fire & electrical safety:
If you’re installing fryers, griddles or ovens, you’ll need proper extraction, fire blankets, and possibly a Gas Safe engineer if gas is used.

Neighbours & noise:
Because it’s in a garden, your council may ask about smells, noise, or delivery traffic. Keeping it tidy and quiet helps avoid complaints.

So in short — yes, you need to talk to your local council first before using the shop or garden for food. Once approved, you can safely set up your dark kitchen without risking fines or closure.
