Converted motorhome set up as a mobile catering unit for street food

Hello David, I`m preparing everything for start in my food van business. But I have a big question: Can I prepare my motorhome for use it for selling food? Maybe I'll have some problem with heath/safety test because I have a bathroom?
Any problem with the toilet inside of caravan?
Thank you so much David.

Can I Use a Motorhome as a Mobile Catering Unit?

I get asked this quite a lot, and the short answer is yes, you can use a motorhome for mobile catering, but there are a few things you need to get right before you start serving food from one.

The first thing to understand is that the EHO doesn't care what type of vehicle you use. They care about the inside. As long as your setup meets food hygiene standards, you could trade from a horsebox, a shipping container, or a motorhome. What matters is that you have the right equipment, proper surfaces, correct hand washing and food prep facilities, and a layout that allows you to work safely and hygienically.

For a motorhome conversion, you'll need stainless steel work surfaces where you're preparing food, a dedicated hand wash basin with hot and cold running water, and a separate sink for food prep or washing up. That's two sinks minimum. You'll also need adequate ventilation if you're cooking with gas, and proper storage for your ingredients at the right temperatures.

The big consideration with a motorhome is the gas installation. If you're fitting a griddle, fryer, or any propane powered cooking equipment, the gas pipework, regulators, and connections must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The existing gas system in the motorhome for the cooker or heating is domestic spec, and it's not the same as what you need for commercial catering equipment. Don't assume you can just hook your catering kit into the existing gas supply. Get it done properly and get your gas safety certificate.

One advantage of a motorhome is that it's self contained. You've already got water tanks, a power system, and often a generator hookup point. That can save you money compared to fitting out a bare van from scratch. The downside is space. Motorhomes aren't designed for commercial cooking, so you may find the layout is cramped once you've fitted a full catering setup. Think carefully about your menu and how much equipment you actually need before you commit to the conversion.

My advice would be to start by checking with your local EHO. Show them your plan for the motorhome layout, the equipment you're going to install, and how you'll manage food safety. They'll tell you if there's anything you need to change before you spend any money. That conversation is free and could save you thousands.

Good luck with it

David
