gas equipment on while driving a catering van

Hello,

No — you must NOT have fryers, griddles or gas appliances on while driving.

Now the friendly, real-world explanation

Can I have fryers or gas equipment on while driving a catering van?

It’s a really common question, especially if you’re planning to move around a village or stop at different spots.

But in the UK, the rule is clear:

Gas appliances must be turned OFF while the vehicle is moving.

That means:

Fryers off

Griddles off

Gas coffee machines off

Gas supply isolated

Why is this such a big deal?

Think of it this way (no scare tactics, just reality):

Fryers and burners have open flames

Hot oil can spill or slosh while moving

LPG is heavier than air — a leak can pool inside the van

One accident, bump, or hard brake could turn into a serious fire risk

Because of this, UK Gas Safe guidance and insurers do not allow appliances to run in transit.

What SHOULD I do while driving?

Here’s the correct (and safe) setup:

Turn all gas appliances fully off

Close the appliance isolation valves

Ideally shut off gas at the main LPG bottle

Secure fryer lids, baskets, and oil containers

Only relight appliances once parked and stationary

This is exactly what a Gas Safe engineer will expect to see.

"But I’m only driving a short distance…"

Even if it’s:

Just round the corner

Between streets in a village

From one pitch to another

The answer is still no gas on while moving.

Most mobile caterers:

Heat oil up once parked

Allow 10–20 minutes before service

Plan routes so they’re not constantly moving

Will this affect insurance or inspections?

Yes — in a big way.

If something goes wrong and:

Appliances were on while driving

Gas wasn’t isolated

Your insurance may be invalid, and a Gas Safe engineer could refuse certification.

Simple rule to remember

Drive = gas off
Parked = gas on

Stick to that and you’ll stay safe, legal, and insurable. Stay safe and legal, best of luck.
